Возвращаясь к напечатанному: контрабандисты и хасиды

Как многие уже знают, одна из глав нашей очешуительной книги посвящена еврейским контрабандистам: скандальная пьеса Эфрона, свидетельства современников, сотрудничество с религиозными организациями.. Среди прочего, писали мы о прусском раввине Элиягу Гутмахере, имевшем репутацию чудотворца, к которому некоторые контрабандисты обращались за советом и благословением.

Насколько это явление было типичным, на момент написания книги аз, многогрешный, не знал, и вообще никаких материалов на эту тему не встречал. Пока буквально вчера не прочел в очередной монографии:

In Volhynia and Congress Poland, where because of various legal restrictions there were fewer tavernkeepers than in Galicia, smugglers (peklmakhers) held a significant position among the Hasidim. Rebbes are portrayed cooperating with smugglers by Levinsohn in Emek Refa’im, in the anonymous Di Genarte Velt (The deceived world), and by Fischelsohn in his Teyator fun Khsidim. Abraham Ber Gottlober tells in his memoirs of knowing “such persons who call themselves Hasidim” who come over the border to Galicia to the son of Rebbe Israel of Ruzhin and whose visits are “merely coverups” for smuggling contraband on their way back home.
In Emek Refa’im, Levinsohn tells how the rebbe conducts his table. He personally serves the rich guests large portions, while the poor Hasidim bring their own repast from home.In this satire, Levinsohn paints a portrait of such “wealthy men” as intimates of the rebbe. The rebbe advises his son, for example, not to retain the ways of the preachers of morals, not to admonish his people for their devious-ness or “the rich and powerful” for robbing the poor. To the contrary, always latch onto the strong. Honor the wealthy; show favor to the officials. Express concern for the welfare of officials like: ratmanes [city council members], gemines [town council members], communal heads, otkuptshikes, kvartirne komisar and the like. Keep close to smugglers and advise them how to prosper.

Просвещенцы, конечно, регулярно писали про хасидов всякие гадости. Однако, учитывая независмое свидетельство о Гутмахере, рискну предположить, что в данном случае они если и преувеличивали, то не сильнно.
